Porsche Boxster 987 Crankshaft Seal Leaks

Crankshaft seals on some Porsche Boxster (987) engines may become damaged from being removed incorrectly. You must be careful not to damage the sealing lip during removal. The proper procedure for returning crankshaft seals to service are as follows:

  • Only use the original packaging in which the new crankshaft seal was supplied (new cankshaft sealing ring p/n 997.101212.00).
  • To avoid damaging the sealing lip, do not secure the parts tag to the crankshaft seal using fastening wire, instead place it with the original packaging or attach it to the outside of the packaging (Figure 1).

The identifying feature of the new crankshaft seal is the 8 rectangular cutouts on the outer side  of the sealing ring (Figure 2).

The new seal covers Porsche Boxter M96 engines with casting numbers 25 615 08519 (2.7L) and 26 625 07322 (3.2L).
