Installing Alignment Pins in VW W8 Intake Manifolds

Engine damage from intake manifold alignment pin entering engine cylinder. The upper and lower intake manifolds, and gasket are aligned using two steel dowel pins -A- in positions shown. If care is not taken to ensure these pins are in place when removing and installing the upper intake manifold, the alignment pin(s) may fall (unnoticed) into lower intake manifold. If the engine is started, the pin may then fall into a cylinder and will cause severe damage to the engine.

Service

Whenever repairs require separation of the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold:

• ALWAYS ensure that the alignment pins are located in the proper position.

If one or both pins are not in the proper position:

• Locate the missing pin(s) (which may have fallen into the lower intake manifold).

• Reinstall the locating pins in the proper position prior to reassembling the intake manifolds.
