One-Piece Steel Pistons
New pistons for Caterpillar 3500 feature improved design, alloy.
IPD has released its new one piece steel pistons for the Caterpillar® 3500 engines. This new product features new design enhancements for the 3500 steel piston made possible by IPD’s patent-pending one-piece oil gallery retention plate. In order to prevent the piston from experiencing extreme thermal loading as seen in other products in the market place, this innovative one-piece design limits plate movement and firmly secures the oil gallery retention plate.
Additionally, these new pistons will utilize IPD’s patent-pending technology for manufacturing one-piece steel pistons from a high-strength alloy and heat-treated steel casting. This process was introduced into the company's product line in 2003 and has been successfully and extensively tested. This is one of the many scheduled releases of the IPDSteel piston line for Caterpillar as well as for other additional engine lines.
“Clearly, IPD’s commitment to innovation is showcased in these new product launches. Not only are we the first in the aftermarket industry to offer one piece steel pistons, but we have significantly improved the product design with our one-piece dam plate,” stated Steve Scott, Director of Product Development, IPD. “This unique and original design can eliminate incidences where the plates can work themselves loose preventing catastrophic damage,” continued Scott.
“The evolution in diesel piston design from the traditional aluminum pistons to steel pistons played an influential role in IPD dedicating resources for this new product offering,” said Bob Straw, VP of Sales & Marketing, IPD. “Steel piston technology has been widely recognized to promote significant gains in performance and durability.”
In addition, IPD has increased its production capacity to support the new 3500 series steel pistons due to growing customer demand for quality steel pistons in the aftermarket. These products will be produced in the United States at their manufacturing plant in Torrance, CA.
