Isuzu Piston Ring Installation Update

There are some procedural updates for installing piston rings on 6VD1 and 6VE1 engines

Affected vehicles/engines:

All 1998 through 2001 Isuzu vehicles equipped with 6VD1 or 6VE1 engines.

Service Procedure:

The procedure for replacing piston rings in affected vehicles has changed. Previously published service information indicates #1 compression ring has a "T" mark on the "UP" side of the ring (Figure 1).

Replacement rings (piston ring set, p/n 8.97136-136-0) do not contain the marking (Figure 2). The new #1 replacement ring has identical taper on the upper and lower edges and can be installed in either direction. If old piston rings are re-used, all parts must be reinstalled in their original positions.

Both Factory installed and replacement #2 compression rings are marked with a "2Y." The "2Y" mark must be facing up duringinstallation (Figure 3).

Some or all of this information was provided by the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). For more information on technical bulletins available through APRA call 703-968-2772 or visit www.AutoBulletins.com.
