UNOH Motorsports Team Assists, Competes at DIRTCar Nationals
The University of Northwestern Ohio Motorsports Team, consisting of 27 students and 2 coaches, traveled to Volusia, FL to assist and compete in the 40th Annual DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park February 8-15, 2011.
UNOH fielded 9 race cars including three student-built and crewed cars driven by UNOH student drivers Chris Puskas, Andy Straight and Kody Weisner. Limaland drivers Terry Hull, John Henry and Todd Sherman (Limaland Modified 2010 Champion) also drove UNOH cars and professional drivers Kenny Wallace and Ty and Austin Dillon of Richard Childress Racing also competed in cars carrying the UNOH logo.
Austin Dillon won the first feature of the event and Ty Dillon won The Gator Championship. UNOH Student drivers placed well in qualifying rounds and advanced to the feature nearly every night. On average, said a team spokesperson, students participated in qualifying and feature races amont 90 modified cars each night of the DIRTcar Nationals.
The University has sent race teams to Volusia for four years, and 2011 was by far the best year for student performance. This year, all of the school’s trailers and car haulers were wrapped in the school's new black, orange and yellow theme.
The University Motorsports team is made up of student athletes who receive scholarships similar to our other athletic programs. Students build, crew and drive modified and stock cars at Limaland Motorsports Park, Eldora Speedway, and many other tracks.
