Copper vs. MLS Gaskets for 1,500 HP
For a 1,500-hp capable engine, should it be sealed with copper or MLS gaskets?
Talking Gaskets and Seals with the Pros
Modern engines have taken us a long way from traditional gasket and seal design, and advancements in the technology and composition of rubber as well as advancements in molding processes have brought sealing capabilities to a new level.
Gaskets and Engine Sealing
What a difference a century makes. Engine sealing technology has come a long way from the days when motors were expected to leak and drip past the gasket and onto the ground or vent out into the atmosphere. In the early 20th century, when most people were switching from horses to cars, other, more natural
MLS Gasket Update 2017: Is there anything the MLS gasket can’t do?
Sometimes, the less you know the better. I’ve spent the last 50 or so years punishing all types of engines with insane compression ratios, huge doses of nitrous oxide, and virtually every type of supercharger I could get my hands on.
Diesel Performance Head Gaskets
The stock head gaskets that are used in most light truck diesel engines are robust enough to handle peak combustion pressures in the 1800 to 2200 PSI range, but may not do so well at higher pressures if the engine has been tweaked to produce more power.
When to Upgrade a Performance Head Gasket
A rule of thumb for performance engine building is that if you are doubling an engine’s power output, or are going much over 550 to 600 hp, you should upgrade to some type of aftermarket performance gaskets. Upgrades usually require no additional modifications. You just swap a performance MLS gasket for the stock head gasket.
Head Gaskets and Fasteners
The relationship between head gaskets and head bolts is an intimate one. The clamping load applied by the head bolts is what allows the head gasket to maintain its seal. For this marriage to last, there has to be constant tension – not too much, otherwise the bolts may stretch or break, and not too
