API’s Lubricants Standards Group has agreed to ballot three new passenger car gasoline engine oil standards: ILSAC GF-6A, GF-6B and API SP. These standards will specify more stringent API engine oil performance requirements for spark-ignited internal combustion engines. ILSAC GF-6A will be backward compatible for engines for which API SN in viscosities as low as SAE 0W-20 is recommended, and GF-6B will be backward compatible for engines for which API SN SAE 0W-16 oil is recommended.
If the ballots are approved, SAE 0W-16 oils meeting GF-6B will be identified with a new symbol to prevent misapplication by service providers and consumers. First licensing against the proposed standards is expected to be May 1, 2020.
