Founded in 1968, Borowski Race Engines, Inc. (BRE) is a leader in the market for high-end LS engines built with Dart LS Next engine blocks. BRE’s current focus on LS engines is now being expanded to include Big Block Chevy (BBC) engines using Dart Machinery’s Big M and Big M Sportsman blocks.
The Sportsman blocks have ductile iron caps and are great for naturally aspirated and light boost engine builds. The Big M’s have billet steel caps and are capable of handling considerably higher boost. The shop’s standard bore size for both will be 4.560”. This adds cubic inches over the BBC standard 4.500” bore, but still leaves room for future refreshes.
The Sportsman blocks in BRE’s inventory have the BBC standard deck height of 9.800”. Their Big M blocks are tall decks (10.200”). A tall deck allows for either larger displacement or builds at the same displacement using more robust parts. All BRE’s BBC builds will use the same 4.250” stroke. BRE would rather use more boost to hit horsepower targets than push the cubic inches using weaker parts combinations and engine geometries. Borowski’s selected dimensions (4.560” bore x 4.250” stroke) yield 555 cubic inches of engine displacement.
The shop’s builds will feature parts from the same vendors it has been using for its LS engines as it now adds BBC builds to the mix. Brands such as Callies Performance, Diamond Pistons, COMP Cams, and Dart Machinery for blocks and cylinder heads.
BRE will continue to offer parts and assemblies to other engine builders, speed shops and retail customers. BRE is currently running a limited-time introductory special of free finish-machining and assembly of the Dart BBC Sportsman now in BRE inventory with the purchase of the block, parts kit and cam bearings.
The blocks can be finished to any bore size from 4.560” to the Dart recommended 4.625” maximum.
