FP Diesel connecting rod bearings for many hardworking Caterpillar 3500 engines now feature an exclusive “intelligent” overplate material that helps eliminate common cavitation erosion and adhesion issues associated with conventional tri-metal aluminum alloys. The new FP Diesel bearings (FP-1077330) feature Federal-Mogul’s innovative G-188 high-strength material, which offers significantly greater hardness than conventional overplates and adapts its wear resistance and load carrying capacity to the conditions encountered in each application.
The Federal-Mogul G-188 material contains a proprietary EC-88 adaptive overplate that develops its wear resistance and load carrying properties under thermal stress and pressure. The material’s tin-copper layer is comparatively soft during the initial running-in phase, allowing it to more effectively adapt to the surface structure of the crankshaft. Over time, the diffusion of nickel and tin atoms from other layers results in an overplate capable of resisting extremely high loads while providing exceptional adaptability and bedding-in properties.
