Turbocharged 5.9L Cummins

Today's Diesel of the Week was put together by Zachary Fish, a newcomer to UCC this year. Check it out!

Next up in our Diesel of the Week series from the 2023 Ultimate Callout Challenge (UCC) is a complete newcomer to the event! We love UCC not only for it displaying some of the most competitive diesel trucks in the world, but also for it showcasing new talent in the industry and guys and gals just getting started with diesel racing.

One of those novices was Zachary Fish, a diesel we met early on in the weekend.

“I’ve wanted to do diesel racing at UCC for a long time and wanted to get a truck around for it,” Fish said. “It took me a few years, but I finally got something ready last minute and thought I might as well give it a shot. What happens, happens. If it blows up, it blows up. Either way it’ll be a good weekend.”

Luckily, Fish’s truck didn’t blow up and he was able to successfully run in the ET class.

Fish is the owner/operator of Fish Farms and Trucking. Being a truck driver during the day and farmer at night, he doesn’t have the machining capabilities of some of the crazier guys at UCC, but he was still able to put together a ~1,000 horsepower engine and confidently race it over the weekend.

“I’ve got 300% over-injectors, a brand-new fire-ringed head, ARP studs, heavier valve springs and pushrods, and a 12mm fuel pump. I run Amsoil’s motor oil and all the additives and stuff, and that seems to be doing a really good job. As far as the bottom end goes, its essentially all stock.”

“I got a single turbo, a Smeding Diesel S475. I actually bought it off a buddy for a couple hundred bucks since it ended up being too big for his truck, and that was kind of a another last minute deal. But it’s been working great.”

Diesel of the Week is sponsored by AMSOIL. If you have an engine you’d like to highlight in this series, please email Engine Builder Editor Greg Jones at [email protected].

There’s something to say about separating your hobbies from your career. It’s good for a lot of people, but others might get burnt out dealing with the stresses of a career that might surround a particular passion. Jordan Blackard is one of those guys who decided to keep diesel trucks as a side passion rather than a career, and he’s better for it.
