Egge Machine Co. has been added to the list of companies presenting workshops during the 2010 Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show’s Education & Training Day, which takes place Thursday, March 11 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.
Egge was founded by Edward N. Egge in 1915 as a small repair shop. Known as the E.N. Egge Auto Co., the Plainview, Texas, shop sold and rented cars owned by E.N., as well as serviced and repaired the various cars owned by the locals.
E.N. moved his shop to downtown Los Angeles in 1923 and changed the name to Egge Machine Co. Egge serviced the cars and trucks of a growing California population. The citrus boom was at its peak and Egge grew to include tractor motor parts in an effort to keep up with the changing times.
In the 1940s, E.N.’s son, Nels, began designing, building and utilizing steel molds in conjunction with sand casting pistons.
“Perhaps the biggest step in growing the business in the last 1940s was when Dad learned to make piston molds using hot-rolled steel,” Bob Egge, Nels’ son said in a statement released by the company. ”The company transitioned from sand casting to permanent mold casting, which was a huge step for Egge.”
In 1972, Nels moved the company to its present location in Santa Fe Springs, California, where Egge has more than 50,000 square feet of manufacturing, warehousing, office and showroom space. Further enhancement to the manufacturing process came in the form of hydraulic molding equipment.
The company has grown to include many services, such as pump remanufacturing and babbitting of block and rod bearings. Today, Egge Machine Co. continues to focus on supplying the automotive aftermarket with hard-to-find and obsolete engine parts. The manufacturing facility is recognized as the last remaining cast piston manufacturer in the United States for nostalgic engine applications.
What was primarily known as an internal engine components manufacturer, Egge has developed strategic alliances with manufacturers of engine dress-up items and nostalgic performance equipment.
Egge has released a special 95th Anniversary Catalog to showcase the company’s focus on product diversification. “The Egge Life” section features tech articles, an event guide, employee enthusiasts, shop tour and customer cars. The “Egge Speed Shop” section features nostalgic performance, dress-up items and hot rod accessories. The catalog also has over 120 pages full of comprehensive engine rebuild kits.
