Turbocharged 5.9L 12-Valve Cummins Engine

Logan Yelton's '93 Dodge has gone through quite the transformation. It was once used to transport him and his wife to prom back in the day to now burning rubber on the drag strip with 1,800 horsepower on command. This 5.9L 12-valve Cummins-powered monster has done it all. See what went into the build!

Owner Logan Yelton launched his full-time business venture Loganbuilt back in 2018, with the goal of providing the most reliable transmissions possible using only the highest-quality parts from Goerend Transmission Inc., Sonnax Performance, and other select vendors. He focuses on the ongoing development and improvement of the 47/48RE platform, as well as manufacturing his own parts line and providing fabrication or chassis services.

Logan himself is not much of an engine enthusiast. Rather, he’s all about the transmission side of things. However, don’t let that fool you – the engine he assembled for his Ultimate Callout Challenge truck is a testament to his dedication to perfection.

Logan’s journey with this 12-valve Cummins engine began with a collaboration with Scheid Diesel, known for their prowess with 12-valve mechanical setups. They provided the expertise for the machine work, specs, and guidance for the engine build.

“Dan Scheid and Jared Jones are the best when it comes to 12-valve mechanical stuff,” Yelton says. “We told them what we wanted and they did all the machine work. Then, a good friend of mine and I did all the assembly work.”

The bottom end of this engine features a standard bore setup with billet rods. Importantly, they retained the original 5.9L filled block to preserve cylinder strength, avoiding boring it out. The cylinder head received extensive porting and was meticulously spec’d by Scheid. Scheid also handled the intake runner and billet cam profile. They went all out with seven cam bushings in the block, main studs, and other standard enhancements to handle the power.

One glance at Logan’s engine, and you can’t help but notice the Precision Turbo GEN2 Pro Mod 98mm turbo, boasting a 98mm compressor, 108mm turbine wheel, and a 115mm exhaust housing. Nitrous is a significant power adder in this setup as well. Four nitrous kits are in place, two for spool-up and one for down the track. An AFR sensor is used to fine-tune the nitrous to achieve cleaner combustion, addressing the notorious smokiness associated with 12-valve engines.

Fueling this monster is a set of Scheid injectors, specifically the international 5x35s. It’s paired with a Scheid 13mm fuel pump, although it’s tuned conservatively to maintain clean operation. The entire combination is capable of producing north of 1,800 horsepower, but Yelton keeps it around 1,700 or less to ensure safety for the filled block.

The cherry on top of this incredible diesel package is Logan’s 1993 Dodge truck. This truck has a history, as Logan used to drive it to high school and even took his wife to prom with it back in the day. Over the years, it evolved from a street truck into a dedicated Pro Street drag racer.

Built to adhere to Pro Street rules with a 4,400-lb. weight limit, this ’93 Dodge serves as the perfect canvas for showcasing the power and finesse of the 12-valve Cummins engine.
