Why Cutting Fluids Are Imperative to Machining

In order to produce the best performing engines with tight tolerances and finishes, CNC machines require cutting fluids to perform at the highest levels. You might think a fluid is a fluid is a fluid, but you’d be wrong.

Ultrasonic Cleaning Technology

Ultrasonic cleaning is one of the ways engine builders can choose to clean parts, but what is it and how does it work? Is it the too-good-to-be-true stuff of science fiction or is it the best technique ever for cleaning the dirtiest of engine components? The truth, as they say, lies somewhere in the middle.

Core Sourcing Heads & Blocks

Cores are the heart and soul of the engine rebuilding business. If you don’t have a core, you don’t have an engine to rebuild. The challenge is getting the right cores that are in demand, and at a price that you and your customers can afford.

Valve Lifter Basics and Beyond

Valve lifters play a key role in the valvetrain of pushrod engines. They go all the way back to the earliest days of the internal combustion engine. The earliest engines did not have pushrods or rocker arms. They were a “flathead” design with the valves in the block. The lifters (also called “tappets” because of the clattering noise they produced) rode on the cam lobes in the block and actuated the valves directly.

Under Pressure: The Importance of Getting the Right Amount of Spring Pressure

If we were to sum up the role that the valve spring plays in regard to its function as part of the overall valve train with one word, that word would be control. Considering that it is the predominant part responsible for keeping all of the valve train components in constant contact with the camshaft lobe, it’s easy to see how important getting the correct amount of spring pressure can be.

Regulations and Research: How PC-11 Became a CK-4/FA-4 Reality

PC-11 had its beginnings at least a decade ago due to the EPA and government regulators pushing for higher heavy-duty truck fuel economy standards. The American Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) wrote a letter to the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) asking for their help in developing new, more fuel efficient diesel engine oils. Everyone agreed that new heavy-duty engine oil specifications would be needed to improve fuel economy significantly. Engine manufacturers, chemical companies, and oil marketers then began the process of identifying new engine and lab tests to define the performance levels needed to create these oils. Considerable R & D has occurred since that letter.

Labor Pains: What Do You Charge to Rebuild the 6.0L Power Stroke?

The 6.0L Power Stroke diesel was introduced as the eventual successor to the popular – but less emissions-friendly – 7.3L Power Stroke. For a year, both engines were available in Ford’s diesel pickups, but in 2004 the 7.3L was retired.

Sealing Combustion Pressure: The Many Functions of Diesel Gaskets

To keep a diesel engine together, the most critical sealing component is the cylinder head gasket. The explosive force of the diesel’s cylinders cause engine vibration and cylinder head shift. Under high boost conditions (usually around 40 psi), the cylinder head will literally try to lift from the cylinder block.
